August 2014 – British Athletic League – Bath

Harrow Athletic Club’s British League squad finished the season on a high with a great result in the final round in Bath on Saturday, writes Tony Bush.

The Bannister-based outfit placed second of the eight clubs, just a single point behind winners Basingstoke, and finish the season in third spot, with two teams being promoted.

Dave Sketchley completed a remarkable eighth consecutive javelin victory, defying the heavy pre-Bertha rain to record 53.74, just half a metre clear of his nearest rival. Tony Daffurn also finished the 2014 season unbeaten, again winning the triple jump with 15.01, also during the worst of the rain. Felix Maisey-Curtisreturned to the team after international commitments and eased to long jump victory with 7.53.

Luke Roach-Christie again took second spot in the shot and also set a new personal best of 40.50 for third in the discus. David Cedro set a personal best on his British League debut, clearing four metres for fourth in the pole vault, while Tom Nichols placed third in the high jump and set a new best of 15.60 for third in the sprint hurdles, despite a strong headwind.

Matt Carey led all the way to win the steeplechase in a solid 9.23.80 while Andy Holliman set a new best of 4.00.13 in the 1500m. Steve Mears won the B string 1500 and also took second spot in the B 800m.
